Somewhere Over The Rainbow- Israel Kamakauoi 1939

For those of you that don’t know, I am the ULTIMATE Wizard of Oz fan. I am not a movie watcher and I never understand any movie references, but I have watched the Wizard of Oz a million times. I still get chills when Dorothy sings one of my favorite songs, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”. I think it is so popular and iconic that it is quite overlooked for the amazing positivity & hope in this song. Listen and sing the words to guarantee to brighten your day. Also CLICk HERE to listen to this little girl’s cover of this song, because it gave me chills and made me cry! Skip to 1:45 if you don’t want to hear her story.

“Someday I’ll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Away above the chimney tops
That’s where you’ll find me

Somewhere over the rainbow
Blue birds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then oh why can’t I?”

I think this is why I LOVE this song so much. “Birds fly over the rainbow, why then oh why can’t I?” That explains my personality perfectly. If someone else can do it, then so can I. If others can live their dream life, then there’s no reason I can’t as well … and the same is for you!

Come Fly With Me- Frank Sinatra 1958

You just gotta love some Frank Sinatra. If this song doesn’t make you want to go on a “vacation” with your lover immediately, I don’t know what will.

Come fly with me, let’s fly, let’s fly away
If you could use some exotic booze
There’s a bar in far Bombay
Come fly with me, let’s fly, let’s fly away

Come fly with me, let’s float down to Peru
In llama-land there’s a one-man band
And he’ll toot his flute for you
Come on fly with me, let’s take off in the blue

Take Me Home, Country Roads- John Denver 1971

This song will forever spark one of my favorite travel memories of all time. There was nothing short of magical as me and a group of friends are drinking German beer from a tent at Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany in 2015, and this song comes on. Immediately, the whole tent roared of EVERYONE singing every word at the top of their lungs. A tent of literally hundreds of people all grabbed their beer in one hand and their neighbor in the other, as we swayed back and forth to the rhythm, and sang the iconic lyrics …

“Country roads, take me home to the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mamma, take me home, country roads”

Escape (The Pina Colada Song)- Rupert Holmes 1979

For the longest time, I only knew the chorus to this song, and it obviously made me want to be sipping Pina Coladas anywhere tropical. The song is actually about a guy answering an ad to escape his wife to somewhere tropical, then it turns out his wife is the one that posted the ad. Feeling tropical? Put this tune on loud and pretend to be on your favorite beach.

Yes, I like piña coladas and getting caught in the rain
I’m not much into health food, I am into champagne
I’ve got to meet you by tomorrow noon and cut through all this red tape
At a bar called O’Malley’s where we’ll plan our escape

So I waited with high hopes and she walked in the place
I knew her smile in an instant, I knew the curve of her face
It was my own lovely lady and she said, “oh, it’s you.”
Then we laughed for a moment and I said, “I never knew.”

Kokomo- Beach Boys 1988

Again with the tropical vibes, which are always my favorite. Travis doesn’t like this song much and I have no clue why lol. You should ask him. To each his own I guess. Are you a Beach Boys fan?

“Off the Key’s Of Florida there’s a place called Kokomo
That’s where you want to go to get away from it all
Bodies in the sand, tropical drink melting in your hand
We’ll be falling in love to the rhythm of a steel drum band
Down in Kokomo”

I’m Gonna Be (50 Miles) – The Proclaimers 1988

This will forever be one of my favorite hiking songs. Chanting “500 Miles” while climbing a beautiful mountain never gets old.

“But I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walks a thousand miles
To fall down at your door”

Fly Away- Lenny Kravits 1998

Here’s a glimpse of my favorite lyrics from the amazing Lenny. I could daydream to this song all day, and sometimes I do!
Let’s go and see the stars
The milky way or even mars
Where it could just be ours
Let’s fade into the sun
Let your spirit fly
Where we are one
Just for a little fun
Oh oh oh yeah!
I want to get away
I want to fly away
Yeah yeah yeah

The World Ain’t Slowin Down-Ellis Paul 1998

You gotta get gone, you gotta get going
Hey, the world ain’t slowing down for no one
It’s a carnival callin’ out to you
It sounds like a song,
Hits you like scripture
You paint the picture
With colors squeezed from your hand
Weren’t you the kid
Who just climbed on the merry-go-round
Hey look, the world ain’t slowing down

It’s My Life- Bon Jovi 2000

This song just really has a way of inspiring you to take your life by the reigns and live it to the fullest. Between the awesome lyrics & upbeat tune, this song is the bomb.

It’s my life
It’s now or never
I ain’t gonna live forever
I just want to live while I’m alive

A Thousand Miles- Vanessa Carlton 2001

Is anyone else guilty of onlt thinking of white chicks when this song comes on? You literally can’t help but sing along with this one, preferably driving in the car with the wind blowing in your hair, and a nice view … but alone in your bedroom works too.

“If I could fall into the sky
Do you think time would pass me by?
‘Cause you know I’d walk a thousand miles
If I could just see you tonight”

Live Like You Were Dying- Tim McGraw 2004

Talk about a tear jerker. I don’t think I have ever heard a song that puts life more into perspective. The chorus says it all. This song gives me chills every time I put it on. Also if you’re reading this, go tell a loved one how much you love them.

“I went skydiving
I went Rocky Mountain climbing
I went 2.7 seconds on a bull named Fumanchu
And I loved deeper
And I spoke sweeter
And I gave forgiveness I’d been denying”
And he said
“Someday I hope you get the chance
To live like you were dying”

Life Is A Highway-Rascal Flats 2008 (original in 1991)

“There’s a world outside every darkened door
Where blues won’t haunt you anymore
Where brave are free and lovers soar
Come ride with me to the distant shore
We won’t hesitate
To break down the garden gate
There’s not much time left today”

I Hope You Dance- Lee Ann Womack 2009

“I hope you never lose your sense of wonder
You get your fill to eat but always keep that hunger
May you never take one single breath for granted
God forbid love ever leave you empty handed
I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens
Promise me that you’ll give faith a fighting chance
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
I hope you dance”

Good Life- One Republic 2009

This one will definitely inspire your wanderlust. I know most of us travelers can totally relate to the lyrics of this song. Meeting new people & seeing new places are so important to making this a good life. Good vibes all around with this tune. Enjoy.
“Woke up in London yesterday
Found myself in the city near Piccadilly
Don’t really know how I got here
I got some pictures on my phone
New names and numbers that I don’t know
Address to places like Abbey Road
Day turns to night, night turns to whatever we want
We’re young enough to say
Oh, this has gotta be the good life”

Hopeless Wanderer-Mumford & Sons 2012

I’m not going to lie, I just can’t get with this song. I have had it recommended to me multiple times, so here it is for you. It might be more your style.
“Left a clouded mind and a heavy heart
But I am sure we could see a new start
So when your hopes on fire
But you know your desire
Don’t hold a glass over the flame
Don’t let your heart grow cold
I will call you by name
I will share your road
But hold me fast, hold me fast
‘Cause I’m a hopeless wanderer”

Best Day of My Life – American Authors 2013

If you are ever having a bad day, do yourself a favor and put this song on. The American Authors nailed it.
“This is gonna be the best day of my life
My li-i-i-i-i-ife
I howled at the moon with friends
And then the sun came crashing in
Wo-o-o-o-o-oh, wo-o-o-o-o-oh
But all the possibilities
No limits just epiphanies
Wo-o-o-o-o-oh, wo-o-o-o-o-oh”

I Lived-One Republic 2013

Another amazing song about living your best life and owning every second that you have. It is impossible to choose my favorite lyrics of this song. If you watch the official video, you will see the heartwarming story of a man with cystic fibrosis. I love this so much.
“I owned every second that this world could give
I saw so many places, the things that I did
Yeah with every broken bone
I swear I lived
I’d like to teach the world to sing
In perfect harmony
Hope that you spend your days
But they all add up
And when that sun goes down
Hope you raise your cup
I wish that I could witness
All your joy and all your pain
But until my moment comes
I’ll say
I, I did it all”

Waves- Robin Schulz 2014

Well maybe this song is about drowning in love, but either way it makes me think of drifting away on a sailboat with a beer in my hand.

“My face above the water
My feet can’t touch the ground,
Touch the ground, and it feels like
I can see the sands on the horizon
Every time you are not around
I’m slowly drifting away (drifting away)”

Welcome To New York- Taylor Swift 2014

I just love everything about New York. This song puts me right in the middle of Times Square with all of the bright lights and commotion. I love it, and I love Tay Tay (yes, we are cool like that).

“It’s a new soundtrack I could dance to this beat
The lights are so bright but they never blind me
Welcome to New York”

Scare Away The Dark- Passenger 2014

If you are ready to feel like you can take on the world, turn on this sing. Another amazing song that gives me chills. I love this message. Take a listen.

“We should run through the forests
We should swim in the streams
We should laugh, we should cry
We should love, we should dream
We should stare at the stars and not just the screens
You should hear what I’m saying and know what it means”

Ready To Run- One Direction 2014

Where are my One Direction fans at? No? Well this is still a good song.

“This time I’m ready to run
Escape from the city and follow the sun
‘Cause I wanna be yours
‘Cause you wanna be mine
I don’t wanna get lost in the dark of the night
This time I’m ready to run
Wherever you are is the place I belong
‘Cause I wanna be free
And I wanna be young
I’ll never look back now I’m ready to run”

Ocean Drive- Duke Dumont 2015

This one is fun. It is awesome to blast in the car as you whip out your best-confined dance moves.

Don’t say a word while we danced with the devil
You brought the fire to a world so cold
We’re out of time on the highway to never
Hold on (hold on), hold on (hold on)

Indian summer- Jai Wolf 2015

I have no idea what he is saying in this song, but I have seen it used as background music in so many videos and I LOVEEEEE it!!! Listen to this song. You won’t regret it.

I am not even going to try to post any lyrics for this one.

Fantasy- Alina Baraz 2016

I AM IN LOVE WITH ALINA BARAZ! I could really put all of her songs on here. She just has this vibe that makes me feel good no matter what is going on. This song in particular is one of my all time favorite. I sing it to Travis allllllll the time!

Seriously, I just want to put all of her lyrics here, but I guess I should choose …

So you say you wanna get away
We don’t need a plane
I could be your escape
Take you to a place
Where there’s no time, no space
I could be your private island
On a different planet
Anything could happen
Listen to the waves
Let them wash away your pain
I could be your fantasy
I could be your fantasy
Underneath the palm trees
You could leave your worries
Listen to the waves
Say you wanna get so high?
Breathe me in like air tonight
Listen to the waves”

I Took A Pill In Ibiza- Mike Posner 2016

Mike Posner really talks about the YOLO lifestyle in this one. Live life, have fun, do drugs, because … why not? You only live once, right?

“I took a pill in Ibiza
To show Avicii I was cool
And when I finally got sober, felt ten years older
But fuck it, it was something to do
I’m living out in LA
I drive a sports car just to prove
I’m a real big baller ’cause I made a million dollars
And I spend it on girls and shoes”

Paris- The Chainsmokers 2017

The Chainsmokers just have this young, wild, wanderlust spirit to them and I love it. They live life and don’t care who agrees or disagrees. I think many of us can relate, or at least wish to.

“We were staying in Paris
To get away from your parents
You look so proud
Standing there with a frown and a cigarette
Posting pictures of yourself on the internet
Out on the terrace
We breathe in the air of this small town
On our own cuttin’ class for the thrill of it
Getting drunk on the past we were livin’ in”

Galway Girl- Ed Sheeran 2017

Ed Sheeran is amazing. This song makes you feel like you just fell in love in an Irish bar. Maybe one day …

“She played the fiddle in an Irish band
But she fell in love with an English man
Kissed her on the neck and then I took her by the hand
Said, “baby, I just want to dance”
My pretty little Galway girl”

Havana- Camila Cabello 2017

Once you hear this song, good luck getting it out of your head. Camila Cabello sounds amazing in this track and really has you daydreaming of Cuba. I wonder how much their tourism has spiked since the release of this gem. Honestly, I hate Young Thug in it so I do not acknowledge his part. What is he even talking about?

“Havana, ooh na-na (ay)
Half of my heart is in Havana, ooh-na-na (ay, ay)
He took me back to East Atlanta, na-na-na
Oh, but my heart is in Havana (ay)
There’s somethin’ ’bout his manners (uh huh)
Havana, ooh na-na”
